One of my favorite people in the San Diego music scene is fellow singer/songwriter, Dave Boodakian (aka Dave Booda). While I don’t get to spend very much time with him, nor are we extremely close, I have watched him become a strong advocate for believing in one’s self. He has these philosophies about being successful and life which are obviously strong willed and possibly bullish, but never discounts the positivity that is sure to follow from putting his ideas into practice. Sure maybe some of the ideas possess a certain amount of naivete or egoism, but in a world that may be too self-conscious to be proud, maybe that’s exactly what we need.

Here’s a something from the Huffington Post about “neverisms”. You know that saying, “never say never”? I used to joke around and say that you break your own rule twice if you say that to someone. Anyways, the post is kind of a laundry list of stuff that you should do to have a more fulfilled and successful life. In a sentimental way, it’s beautiful. In a realistic way, it’s kind of true.

Neverisms

I have these stickers that say “I Think I Believe In Myself”. I think I’m finally going to make a t-shirt to compliment that idea. Let me know what you think!

With everything that happened last year (new band, the SDMA nomination, touring, new songs, new opportunities, etc.) I finally feel like the time is ripe for a full length band album!

My last two efforts (download them here) were good records but really were an experiment with songwriting for me. I enjoy the intimacy of both of those sounds but my musical heart has always been devoted to making big sounds. If you’ve seen the band play around town, I think you understand what I mean.

I’ve been meeting and recording with my friend Keith from Light of Day Studios who I’ve had the pleasure of recording with on Brenda Xu and John Hull’s albums. He’s got really strong sensibilities about what makes a good song and I will definitely be relying on Keith and the rest of the band for their musical expertise. The album will have ten tracks on it and you will probably recognize a few of them. But make no mistake, they will sound very different than what you’re used to!

The tricky thing about recording this album is how my songs have very different styles, maintaining the essence of the feel of those songs but making the album feel like a cohesive whole. I think of it like having your iPod on shuffle when you go from the Beatles to Bill Withers to Miles Davis to Jay-Z. They’re all very different sounding and as our ears get more used to these abrupt musical transitions, I think it would be interesting to make an album like that.

We’re going to begin rehearsing for the album sessions starting the end of the month and I’ll try to record most of the journey from here to the album release! It should be a wild ride!

I also just set up a Pledge Music account where you can help me reach my goal to help me with recording and production costs. It hasn’t gone live yet but it probably will at the end of the month. It’s an expensive venture to put out albums and to even play music in general and that’s why your support is so important! We’re going to be offering some exclusive opportunities for people that donate so stay tuned!

If you’ve been to a show in the last 6 months or so, you may have noticed that I’ve stayed true to my promise to offer “pay what you want” pricing on my music (click here to read the original post). I’m happy to announce that this has been a great success and I’ve been accomplishing exactly what I’ve hoped to accomplish, namely spreading my music to people who want it and appreciate it. I’m also happy to announce that I’ve finally found a viable option for the “pay what you want” model for my website. If you haven’t visited my music store yet, you can view it by visiting kennyeng.com/store or if you simply want to download the music you can visit kennyeng.bandcamp.com. Please consider this my holiday present to you and yours.

It’s been a tricky line to approach and cross because of the implications from doing something like this. Again, my only goal was to get my music into people’s hands and especially to people who want the music but don’t have the immediate means to take it home. That being said, I cannot express my gratitude enough to people who are generous enough to purchase my music. It is one of the many ways I know people appreciate what I do and they support my dream.

Here’s to another amazing year and many more to come! Thank you and happy holidays!

Rob, Isaac and I are officially embarking on the “Adult Books Tour” tomorrow! Check out all the tour dates here.

I have to say, it has not been without it’s challenges. Even as we speak, dates are been moved and rearranged so please check the schedule frequently. We will also be making announcements via the Adult Books Tour Twitter, our own Twitter accounts and Facebook just to keep everyone up to date (including ourselves). We weren’t able to get the transportation we wanted so we had to be creative and pull some strings, either. In case you didn’t know, it’s kinda hard to put on a tour. Even if it’s only ten days long!

But all that being said, if the laughing and good times we’ve all had spending the last few days hanging out and rehearsing and whatnot are any indication of what will happen when we’re finally out on the road, it will be hilarious! I’m sure we’ll post some videos and pictures so definitely check my YouTube and photos.

In fact, here are a few already!

This may be premature, but thank you for joining us and supporting us on our little adventure! We hope to see you at the shows and promise to make it a fun evening of music! Please keep spreading the word and we’ll see you on the road!
